Expanso secures $7.5 million to disrupt distributed data processing market

Enterprise data management startup Expanso has secured $7.5 million in seed funding. General Catalyst, Hetz Ventures and Array Ventures led the funding round. Expanso offers a distributed approach to big data processing with its open-source software, Bacalhau.

Expanso, founded by former Google, AWS and Microsoft employees in Seattle, focuses on open-source solutions to tackle the challenge of utilizing enterprise data.

Distributed big data processing presents challenges regarding data transfer, responsiveness to new data, code conversion and security.

According to Jordan Tigani, CEO and co-founder of MotherDuck, a missing aspect in the modern data stack is the ability to process data at its source rather than initially centralizing everything.

“Bacalhau fills in that missing link, allowing large numbers of remote workers to use DuckDB to filter, summarize and transform data at the edge before communicating results to MotherDuck in the cloud,” explains Tigani.

Bacalhau processes data locally and the company says it reduces costs, enhances speed and increases security in the process.

“Expanso brings compute to the data, enabling businesses to operate securely at their operational pace and maximize the utility of valuable data,” states Quentin Clark, the managing director of General Catalyst.

Bacalhau also allows users to optimize workflows by running Docker containers and WebAssembly (WASM) images as tasks without requiring extensive rewriting, the company claims. It can be deployed on-premises or in various cloud platforms, including AWS, Azure, Google Cloud and Oracle Cloud.

According to Expanso CEO David Aronchick, Infrastructure built to meet data where it is, even if distributed around the world, is long overdue.

“What Expanso is building with Bacalhau is intended to revolutionize the way big data is processed and global compute jobs are executed while unlocking an entirely new class of applications,” he adds.
