Renesas unveils RZ/G3E MPU to power AI-driven edge HMI systems

Renesas has launched the 64-bit RZ/G3E microprocessor (MPU) optimized for high-performance Human Machine Interface (HMI) applications, featuring AI acceleration and edge computing capabilities.

The MPU integrates a quad-core Arm Cortex-A55 CPU (up to 1.8GHz), a Neural Processing Unit (NPU), and advanced graphics for Full HD displays.

It supports AI tasks such as image classification, object recognition, and voice recognition while minimizing CPU load, with dual Full HD output and multiple video interfaces. High-speed connectivity includes PCIe 3.0, USB 3.2 Gen2, dual Gigabit Ethernet, and support for 5G communication.

“The RZ/G3E builds on the proven performance of the RZ/G series with the addition of an NPU to support AI processing,” says Daryl Khoo, vice president of embedded processing at Renesas. “By using the same Ethos-U55 NPU as our recently announced RA8P1 microcontroller, we’re expanding our AI embedded processor portfolio and offering a scalable path forward for AI development. These advancements address the demands of next-generation HMI applications across vision, voice and real-time analytics with powerful AI capabilities.”

Advanced power management enables low-power standby modes and fast Linux resume, with comprehensive Linux software support including Ubuntu, Debian, and Yocto. Key features include a Cortex-M33 core, Ethos-U55 NPU, 32-bit LPDDR4/LPDDR4X memory with ECC, and a 15-year product longevity program.

The RZ/G3E and its evaluation board kit are available now, targeting industrial and consumer HMI systems such as factory equipment, medical monitors, and retail terminals.
