KDDI leverages Wind River Studio for 5G Open vRAN deployment in Japan

Wind River, a provider of software for mission-critical intelligent systems, has announced that Wind River Studio is used by KDDI in their Open RAN-compliant 5G virtualized base station.

“Operators can work with Wind River for solutions to help prepare for a cloud-native future and deliver on high-reliability, ultra-low-latency, and highly efficient solutions for next-generation networks,” said Avijit Sinha, the chief product officer at Wind River.

KDDI uses Wind River Studio Cloud Platform technology to provide automated configuration and monitor the status of geographically distributed far-edge clouds. This enables the large-scale deployment of 5G virtualized base stations, addressing the complex challenges of deploying and managing ultra-low latency infrastructure.

KDDI is developing virtualized base stations to meet the growing demands of 5G network infrastructure, which includes faster deployment and lower costs. The virtualized base station is a software update that will be commercially deployed in February 2022 and is compliant with the O-RAN standard.

“Working closely with leaders such as KDDI, Wind River can deliver proven technology based on Wind River Studio that is live with operators in global deployments,” stated Sinha.

Wind River says it is a pioneering force in the 5G landscape, contributing to the world’s first successful data session and building some of the biggest Open RAN networks globally. They have also innovatively developed commercial vRAN/O-RAN programs that many customers use now.

Studio Cloud Platform is a cloud-native, Kubernetes- and container-based architecture that enables the development, deployment, operations and servicing of distributed edge networks at scale. It provides a single-pane-of-glass management system for thousands of nodes in geographically distributed locations to simplify Day 1 and Day 2 operations with zero-touch automation.

Studio Analytics solutions can help reduce carrier costs and improve the management of distributed cloud infrastructure by collecting and analyzing data to provide valuable insights for making decisions.

KDDI is a telecommunication service provider in Japan offering 5G and IoT services through its brands.
