Vapor IO, a company developing a colocation and interconnection platform to support low-latency workloads at the edge of wired and wireless access networks, recently announced its partnership with Cellnex Telecom in Europe. The alliance will enable Cellnex Telecom to host and integrate AWS Outposts into Vapor IO’s Kinetic Grid platform.
Vapor IO and Cellnex have partnered to bring Vapor IO’s Kinetic Grid to Europe, with the first deployment of the European grid in Barcelona. Through their partnership, Vapor IO plans to expand throughout Europe over the next few years utilizing Cellnex’s infrastructure for digital services.
Eduardo Fichmann, the director of Global Product Strategy and Innovation at Cellnex, notes that “edge computing is more a question of when than why” and that their partnership with Vapor IO will open up new revenue opportunities for the company. The familiarity and scalability of AWS services will help accelerate the deployment of applications and services that require computing closer to the end user.”
Cellnex’s digital infrastructure is set to benefit from the integration of AWS Outposts and Vapor IO’s Kinetic Grid environment, the company says. This technology will enable local processing on AWS Outposts, reduce data traffic to the core networks, improve compliance with data residency requirements and allow the development of stable low latency services.
This can open up potential commercial use cases such as real-time computer vision, smart retail, industrial robotics, autonomous vehicles and medical imaging. Additionally, the project will aid in deploying virtualized radio access network technology (Open RAN or vRAN), the executives say.
“The familiarity and proven scalability of AWS services will help accelerate the deployment of applications and services that require computing in places physically closer to the end user,” adds Fichmann.
