Variscite, an Israeli-based embedded electronic device maker, recently launched a system on module designed for reduced power consumption in edge devices. The new module’s features make it suitable for industrial, IoT, and smart wearable devices, the company says.

The Variscite VAR-SOM-MX93 harnesses NXP’s iMX93 processor core and includes Ethos-U65 microNPU technology. The module is a new addition to the company’s VAR-SOM Pin2Pin system on module (SoM) line. The VAR-SOM series includes an entry-level SoM using i.MX 6UltraLite platform and more advanced options such as the i.MX 8X and i.MX 8QuadMax platforms. Variscite aims to make the VAR-SOM-MX93 a staple of its product range for the upcoming 15 years.

“As a company dedicated to being first to market with innovative solutions, we are proud to deliver the VAR-SOM-MX93, which provides our customers with a high-quality, future-proof SoM that meets the market’s demand for energy-efficiency solution, especially for smart edge devices,” said Ofer Austerlitz, the VP of business development and sales at Variscite.

As mentioned, the Variscite VAR-SOM-MX93 system on module is designed for high-performance applications that require low power consumption. It features a processor core that facilitates a dual-core Arm Cortex-A55 processor with a clock frequency of up to 1.7GHz and a machine-learning inference engine. It also includes an Arm Cortex-M33 processor core, which operates at a speed of up to 250MHz for real-time processing.

Variscite has also introduced an evaluation kit the module. It includes a Symphony carrier board and an optional LVDS display with touch panel. The Variscite Symphony carrier board serves as a single-board computer. It can be used with a variety of systems on modules, providing a range of connectivity options. The carrier board features various interfaces, such as a Gigabit Ethernet PHY, camera interface, HDMI, PCIe and an RTC module.

“This next generation of technology extends the coverage of Variscite solutions for the embedded market,” Austerlitz added.
