Renesas talks up AI and tinyML solutions after Reality AI acquisition

Renesas Electronics Corporation recently shared an update regarding its AI and tinyML solutions, built upon the Reality AI product portfolio it acquired a year ago. Since the deal closws in July 2023, the topic of artificial intelligence has exploded into the headlines, with interest spilling over from generative AI into other areas such as edge AI, which is where Renesas is making its play.

By acquiring Reality AI, Renesas gained access to its expertise in embedded AI solutions for non-visual sensing applications in the automotive, industrial, and commercial sectors. Renesas has integrated Reality AI’s tinyML solutions with its existing offerings in the embedded and IoT domain, which the company believes has greatly improved its capabilities.

As a result, Renesas has introduced a series of solutions that use Reality AI technology to provide advantages to businesses across different industries. Reality AI’s potential is evidenced through two successful implementations: motor control vibration sensing and the development of an affordable and efficient smart heat pump.

Renesas acknowledges that Reality AI’s capabilities have enabled it to offer next-gen features like preventative maintenance and anomaly detection to its customer base.

“ITT Goulds Pumps is implementing data analytics using Renesas AI technology. The unique capabilities of the Renesas AI technology enabled us to develop machine diagnostics that effectively identify equipment faults caused by high vibration and temperature,” says Brad DeCook, the director of research and development, monitoring and controls for ITT Goulds Pumps.

Renesas has incorporated the RealityCheck Motor Toolbox into its microcontrollers, microprocessors and motor control kits. This toolbox uses machine learning algorithms to provide features that include predictive maintenance, anomaly detection and intelligent control feedback.

Additionally, the company integrated Reality AI tools into Renesas compute products, extending support to all Renesas MCUs. This integration enables automatic context switching between Reality AI Tools and e2 Studio, providing users with a more streamlined and efficient development environment.

“The addition of the unique and powerful technology from Reality AI into our portfolio enables our customers to process and react to information faster, more accurately, and with fewer compute and power resources than ever before,” says Sailesh Chittipeddi, the executive vice president and general manager of Renesas’ embedded processing, digital power and signal chain solutions group.
