Mavenir unveils Open RAN intelligent controller to optimize network traffic

Mavenir, a company offering end-to-end and cloud-native software solutions, has introduced an intelligence controller based on the Open Radio Access Network concept. Mavenir’s controller can manage network traffic resources to improve efficiency and facilitate differentiated services through open APIs. The technology allows communications service providers to control the RAN, resulting in more streamlined operations and automated service-level agreements, the company says.

The company says that the Mavenir Open RAN intelligent controller (O-RIC) can overcome the limitations of different self-organizing network architectures by providing programmability to the radio access network. The O-RIC solves these challenges with two control loops– the non-real-time O-RIC and near-real-time O-RIC.

In the non-real-time O-RIC, the applications include offline machine learning model training using data collected from the service management orchestration and the input from the near-real-time O-RIC. In contrast, the near-real-time O-RIC is typically deployed at or near the edge and includes trained machine learning models for inference and controlling radio access network functionalities.

“Creating real business value for next-generation Open RAN networks requires deep telco domain expertise and a disruptive approach to network intelligence,” said Brandon Larson, the senior vice president and general manager of the Multimedia Business Unit at Mavenir.

Mavenir’s O-RIC offers Network Intelligence-as-a-Service, which gives users access to advanced insights and predictive intelligence about the network, allowing them to create complex network solutions, the company says. The solution does away with the problem of being tied to a particular vendor by providing open API frameworks, which can, for example, reduce energy consumption, manage traffic flow, optimize massive MIMO and improve spectral efficiency.

“As a pioneer in cloud-native solutions at a massive scale, Mavenir is leading the way with award-winning Open vRAN solutions, layered with O-RIC AI and ML algorithms and applications, which create operator customizable business outcomes based on target objectives to solve unique business problems and give control of the network back to the CSP,” Larson added.

Mavenir will demonstrate several solutions at the Mobile World Congress 2023 in Barcelona, including the OpenBeam Radio Wall. The company has recently partnered with AMD Technologies to help communication service providers migrate to cloud-native telecom networks. Mavenir is incorporating its OpenRAN OpenBeam Radio technology into AMD’s Zynq Ultrascale+ RFSoC devices in this collaboration.

Last year, Mavenir acquired $155 million in funding to expedite the provision of digital transformation solutions for 5G connectivity.
