Amdocs, Microsoft collaborate on developing private networks and edge computing solutions

Amdocs, a company specializing in communications software and services, has teamed up with Microsoft to develop new use cases that leverage the potential of private networks, edge computing solutions, and the Internet of Things (IoT). Amdocs has optimized its solutions using Microsoft Azure private MEC and Azure Private 5G core that allows for tailored network deployments that serve specific enterprise needs, offering a personalized and efficient approach compared to a one-size-fits-all model.

These use cases were developed at Amdocs’ Americas 5G Experience Lab, located in Dallas, Texas. Launched last year, this facility serves as a hub for service providers and enterprises to explore the capabilities of 5G technology. The lab provides a sandbox environment where companies can experiment with private wireless networks, delve into the potential of Industry 4.0 and address security concerns.

“Our strategic engagement with Microsoft to maximize the potential of cloudification at the edge — together with the power of open, intelligent networks — will create an amazing playing field for the next generation of enterprise experiences & monetization,” says Anthony Goonetilleke, Amdocs Group president of technology and head of strategy.

Among the use cases being developed is an end-to-end solution tailored for smart cities that combine software, connectivity, and physical hardware to create a secure and integrated system. This Amdocs Smart Lighting solution enables cities to implement efficient lighting services, improve public and private internet access capabilities, and deploy a range of city management capabilities. By analyzing real-time environmental data, city management can make informed decisions to optimize operations and enhance overall efficiency.

Another demonstrated use case is Amdocs’ Augmented Reality Maintenance and Training, which facilitates a remote-assist workflow that empowers field technicians to access centralized expertise and receive guidance and support to complete their services or maintenance tasks successfully. By leveraging AR technology, this solution allows for real-time collaboration between the remote expert and the field technician, ensuring accuracy and efficiency in their operations.

“By combining Amdocs’ telco solutions and deep industry expertise with Microsoft’s technology, we can help advance enterprise network possibilities while improving experiences for consumers and businesses,” says Tad Brockway, corporate vice president Azure for Operators, Microsoft.

Amdocs participated in the Big 5G Event, held at the Austin Convention Center in Texas, where it showcased these edge use cases and private network solutions.
