Edzcom, Callio Pyhäjärvi using Nokia private 5G wireless network for Finnish test mine

Edzcom, a Cellnex affiliate company, and Callio Pyhäjärvi have partnered to create an advanced Test Mine powered by Nokia’s private 5G wireless network, allowing for increased automation and digitalization of the mining industry in Finland and around the world.

“Through this partnership, we are confident in our ability to make dynamic changes that optimize our network infrastructure and propel us towards greater efficiency and innovation,” says Sakari Nokela, the chief development officer at Callio Pyhäjärvi.

The Callio Pyhäjärvi Industry Park uses private 5G wireless networks to create a leading Test Mine. They are developing new ways to increase safety measures, predict maintenance needs, optimize mining operations and use advanced analytics.

The “FutureMINE” project, located in Pyhäsalmi, Finland, seeks to unlock new possibilities for the Mining Industry as well as OEM manufacturers of vehicles and machines and end users of battery-powered technology, transport companies, energy storage providers, explosives experts and tunnel construction firms. It is one of the deepest known mines in Europe, reaching 1,445 meters underground.

The Private 5G Wireless Network consists of Nokia Modular Private Wireless (MPW), Compact Mobility Unit (CMU) and Radio Access Network (RAN). The purpose-built solution supports applications such as predictive maintenance, location services and mining automation. It covers 11.5km and eight levels underground, allowing for the testing of various mining applications and the development of future digitalization solutions for sustainability.

“By combining our expertise in leading-edge network solutions with Edzcom’s proficiency in private networks and Callio’s forward-thinking approach, we are poised to unlock unprecedented possibilities for underground mines,” says Pekka Hakala, the sales lead of private wireless at Nokia Finland.
