VMware launches new SD-WAN solution for secure enterprise edge connectivity

At VMware Explore 2022 Europe, VMware launched its next-gen SD-WAN solution. This includes a new SD-WAN Client to help enterprise devices stay connected and secure, as well as improve network resiliency.

As VMware points out, enterprise transformation initiatives require an evolution of SD-WAN. Using the latest SD-WAN and SASE technology, a company’s partner ecosystem can bring edge compute and networking together for optimal application delivery. VMware’s platform offers a unified management interface that is AI-based, making it simpler to monitor operations and identify issues, the company says.

“Enterprises today need more secure, reliable and optimal delivery of applications, data and services regardless of where the application or the user or the device lives,” said Sanjay Uppal, the senior vice president and general manager, Service Provider and Edge at VMware. “The new VMware SD-WAN Client will enable enterprises to provide consistent security and ubiquitous and reliable connectivity to users and devices everywhere.”

VMware says it has progressed in three key areas: cloud transformation, workforce transformation and application development.

As part of VMWare’s cloud transformation, the company and its partners will provide over 200 points of presence worldwide. According to the company, these high-speed, low-latency connections will allow quick access to cloud and SaaS providers. By integrating VMware’s SD-WAN and SASE’s AI capabilities within Edge Network Intelligence, IT teams gain improved visibility into network paths and can take action as needed.

VMware’s latest SD-WAN Client solution provides a secure and high-performance remote access service. It also follows Zero Trust principles to connect endpoints and mobile devices securely. To speed up the development of the SD-WAN Client, VMWare also acquired Ananda Networks’ team, products and IP.

The planned release date for the VMware SD-WAN Client is Spring 2023.

VMware SD-WAN and SASE provide improved connectivity, compute and intelligence with the help of the VMware private mobile network. This managed service offering provides enterprise customers with 4G/5G mobile connectivity to support edge-native applications.

“As longtime partners of VMware, we are excited to see the continued innovation with VMware’s SD-WAN Client solution,” said Darren Wolner, the senior director of SASE product management for Lumen Technologies. “Providing a more secure solution that’s seamless and easy to implement will be a great complement to the access and managed SASE solutions we offer our customers.”

VMware recently collaborated with Equinix to provide digital cloud infrastructure and multi-cloud services for enterprise applications. The two companies announced the release of VMware Cloud on Equinix Metal, a distributed cloud service, at the VMware Explore 2022 Europe conference. This will help customers to keep up with the growing workload while still having low latency, high performance, security and data locality.
