Lumen to expand its edge computing offerings deeper into Europe

Lumen Technologies plans to expand its edge computing services into Europe. The company says it will invest in its global edge network to provide a low latency edge computing platform as customers in Europe increasingly engage in digital transformation efforts.

Lumen says it can currently meet approximately 70% of enterprise demand within 5 milliseconds of latency across UK, France, Germany, Belgium and Netherlands. Still, Lumen plans to add more edge locations by the end of this year to extend the availability of its on-demand network, integrated security, and managed services.

As part of the edge computing expansion project, Lumen has provided an additional 100G MPLS and IP network connectivity with increased power and cooling technology for several edge data center locations. The company has one of the largest and most connected peered networks with approximately 500,000 global route miles of fiber of which the Lumen EMEA network is comprised of approximately 42,000 route miles of fiber.

“Customers in Europe can now tap into the power of the Lumen platform, underpinned by Lumen’s extensive fiber footprint, to deploy data-heavy applications and workloads that demand ultra-low latency at the cloud edge,” said Annette Murphy, regional president, EMEA and APAC, Lumen Technologies. “This delivers peak performance and reliability, as well as more capability to drive amazing digital experiences.”

In addition to network connectivity, Lumen provides multi-service orchestration and automation, and multi-cloud infrastructure which the company says can deliver increased performance, cost control, faster time to market, and ecosystem because of the integrated technologies.

Among several edge computing products, Lumen Edge Private Cloud is a fully managed pre-built infrastructure to provide high-performance private computing across its global fiber network. The technology is built on a full stack of hyper-converged infrastructure from HPE or Dell based on VMware Cloud Foundation with integrated Security and networking capabilities with micro-segmentation.

Lumen Technologies recently announced the expansion of Flux blockchain ecosystem by including servers on the network edge. As the mission to accelerate the development of Web3 technology, Lumen will also support the launch of Flux’s new staking nodes, Project Titan, which aims to increase the number of participants involved in the network.
