Lenovo-powered edge server system promises low power, high-density module with new cooling technologies

San Diego-based Dalrada said it has teamed up with Lenovo and Iceotope to offer a data center solution aimed at edge deployments. The combined solution offers high power density with substantially reduced power requirements, making it suitable for containerized data centers and other edge deployment configurations.

The three parties are aiming the product at AI and other edge computing applications. Dalrada said that the servers with high-power GPUs are all delivered in a rack density without the need for large and costly purpose-built buildings with cold and hot aisles, which will make the solution well suited to these workloads and environments. The company also emphasized that the novel cooling solution means the container will be able to operate almost silently.

The six-rack solution will contain 84 Lenovo servers and use Dalrada’s heat pump to cool the racks with Iceotope’s liquid immersion cooling system.

Dalrada claims that the container offers 168 kW of cooling and 225 kW of heating while using only 56 kW.

The 90ºC water produced by this process can also be sold to the local district’s heat network according to the release. This means an extra income for the customer and even lower energy costs.

Analysis

While the product is impressive, it will probably be better suited to urban environments where being able to sell the hot wastewater to the local heat district is a realistic option. In the absence of that capability, customers will likely need to add absorption chillers to cool wastewater.
