American Tower plants edge flag in Raleigh, eyes 1,000-site expansion

American Tower launched its first edge data center in Raleigh, North Carolina, within the Research Triangle region, a hub for tech, life sciences, and academic research. 

The edge data center supports technologies such aslike generative AI, hybrid cloud computing, and IoT by providing low-latency, reliable infrastructure closer to end users. Located at the base of an existing cellular tower, the facility integrates cellular and data center capabilities for enhanced wireless and wireline network use cases. 

The Raleigh data center offers 1 megawatt of power in a 4,000 sq. ft. facility, scalable to multiple megawatts, with 15 kilowatts of power per rack on average. 

Features include CoreSite’s Open Cloud Exchange for hybrid cloud interconnectivity, expanded bandwidth management, and multiple redundancy systems for reliability. The facility provides 24/7/365 customer support, multilayer security, and multiple fiber connections to ensure uptime and efficiency. 

American Tower plans to expand edge data centers, identifying over 1,000 potential sites for future development. 

The Raleigh data center highlights American Tower’s commitment to scalable, reliable infrastructure and connectivity for evolving customer needs.
