American Tower adds two more edge data centers; this time in Denver, Colorado

American Tower added two edge data centers in Denver, Colorado, as predicted earlier by Structure Research. Colo Atl, American Tower’s data center subsidiary, is again partnering with EdgePresence, in construction of micro data centers.

The following company briefing has been made available through our partnership with Structure Research, an independent research and consulting firm with a focus on the cloud, edge and data center markets.

American Tower is a REIT focused on communications infrastructure. Importantly, with respect to edge data centers, it has over 40k wireless towers in its portfolio. This gives it access to very valuable ground space that is attached to wireless towers and near strategic connectivity pathways. It also owns and controls various connectivity and fiber assets.

The company’s new data centers are being placed near wireless towers at 9110 Interlocken Loop in Broomfield and at 5041 Broadway in Denver. Both of the data centers are 360 square ft. enclosures with 100kW of power and can house three full cabinets and 20 quarter-cabinets. American Tower is partnering with EdgePresence for these micro data centers. It recently set up an edge data center in suburban Atlanta that is connected to a core data center that it owns – Colo Atl – in a centralized location (55 Marietta). The configuration is exactly the same as the ones disclosed for Denver.

American Tower did not confirm a core data center in the Denver area, but that or another nearby centralized location should be in the works.

American Tower’s expanding portfolio comes as its competitors in the tower business do likewise. SBA Communications, a global owner and operator of communications towers, earlier in 2020 acquired the JaxNAP carrier hotel in Jacksonville, Florida. The JaxNAP facility provides colocation and interconnection to a range of customers that includes subsea cables, telcos and roughly 20 fiber providers. SBA has been acquiring assets to gain more hands-on knowledge of how data centers work.

Crown Castle, meanwhile, again participated in a funding round for edge data center and interconnection service provider Vapor IO, which raised $90M earlier this year.
