Stratus ftServer promises 25% performance boost with latest upgrade

Stratus Technologies, an edge computing solutions provider, has upgraded its fault-tolerant computing platform, the Stratus ftServer.

The company says that the upgraded platform combines compute power, reliability and virtualization to support the increasing demands of various industrial and non-industrial applications. The purpose of the solution is to minimize the amount of time mission-critical applications are offline. This is important because downtime could lead to financial losses and potential safety hazards.

According to Stratus Technologies, its newly upgraded fault-tolerant computing platform can provide up to a 25% improvement in performance compared to its previous generation. It combines more CPU cores, increased processor power and expanded networking capabilities for advanced software app deployment at the edge. The Stratus ftServer platform has four configurations with various memory and disk storage options. These include the 6920, 6910, 4920 and 2920 platforms.

“The one thing we absolutely cannot tolerate is a failure in our servers. Any sort of failure and we would be dealing with downtime — pumps and valves not working, water not reaching our customers. Working with Stratus provides peace of mind as downtime is not something we need to worry about,” says Karen Green, the SCADA manager at DC Water.

The new solution builds upon existing edge solutions, such as the ability to monitor the health of edge devices and automate operations. The Stratus ftServer platform offers an edge-in architecture that helps enterprises connect their edge operations with cloud services.

The company says the updated Stratus ftServer platform has an Intel Xeon scalable processor for artificial intelligence IoT applications. The platform also adds optional 10Gb Ethernet in the 2920 configuration platform via a new PCIe card that supports copper and fiber/optical communication.

The supported software on this platform includes VMware vSphere 7.0.3, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.8, Microsoft Windows Server 2022 and Windows Server 2019. In turn, customers can leverage different operating systems for greater flexibility and scalability of edge applications.

“A large pharmaceutical customer was concerned about downtime, and the Stratus ftServer was selected for its high availability and reliability,” says a spokesperson from RoviSys, a global systems integrator partner.
