Picocom, Antevia Networks 5G in-building solution will tackle the 5G indoor coverage challenge

Picocom, a company specializing in 5G and Open RAN silicon, has partnered with Antevia Networks, a provider of 5G in-building solutions for enterprises. The combined solution is intended to address a key issue for 5G deployments, which is indoor signal strength.

One criticism of 5G is that signals are not as well suited for indoor coverage as 4G due to their higher frequency. This translates into greater susceptibility to interference from building materials and other obstacles. Combining 5G and 4G coverage in a single solution will be more appealing than installing a completely independent in-building 5G network.

Antevia Networks chose Picocom’s PC802 5G small cell system-on-chip to be integrated into its intelligent 5G in-building solution, delivering an indoor 5G private network. The co-developed solution will be demonstrated at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The Picocom PC802 is a purpose-built PHY system-on-chip designed for 5G NR and 4G LTE. The company is shipping the module with established software for Open RAN distributed units and radio units. Picocom custom designed this system-on-chip for 5G small cell platforms, such as indoor residential, enterprise and industrial networks. It runs Picocom’s 5G NR and 4G LTE PHY software.

Small cells are compact cellular network equipment intended to deliver robust connectivity in a specific region. They improve network coverage and capacity in high-density areas and extend the core network into indoor environments to establish a private network for an enterprise application.

“In working together with Picocom, their state-of-the-art 5G silicon and collaborative approach are allowing us to innovate faster, reach the market sooner and deliver groundbreaking solutions for enterprises needing cost-effective 5G private networks,” said Simon Cosgrove, the CEO of Antevia Networks.

Antevia Networks was founded in 2021 to develop a cloud-based virtual open platform optimized for indoor deployments. This solution provides users with smart capacity management, traffic routing capabilities and 5G connectivity. Its traffic routing feature allows it to manage excessive demand and provide reliable 5G delivery.

With headquarters in the United Kingdom, Antevia Networks also has research and development teams in Vancouver, Canada.

“I have been very impressed by how Antevia Networks has taken Picocom’s Open RAN O-DU and O-RU components and built a truly innovative solution for indoor coverage, built on the standard open interfaces defined by the O-RAN Alliance,” said Peter Claydon, the president of Picocom.
