NTT Data, Aurora Labs use AI to manage 5G OTA software updates

NTT Data, a subsidiary of NTT Group that provides IT and business services, has joined forces with Aurora Labs, a company specializing in IT infrastructure, to deliver 5G over-the-air updates using advanced AI. The companies say the co-developed solution offers high efficiency and security for the 5G transport layer. Through this strategic partnership, the companies can use each other’s strengths and collaborate on automotive industry initiatives such as production and logistics.

“Through our partnership with Aurora Labs, we combine technological innovation with our industry expertise to meet users’ needs for a better quality of service in a safe and sustainable way,” said Stefan Hansen, the CEO and chairperson of the management board for NTT Data DACH.

The companies believe that the current approach to over-the-air software updates is inadequate for managing the amount of data needed to handle every part of a car’s software lifecycle. Despite this, this update feature is essential for new vehicles during the first year.

Aurora Labs has introduced an AI-based vehicle software intelligence solution, which lets the automotive manufacturer gather sensor data and process it to understand software changes. According to the company, incorporating this software simplifies the software development process. The company claims the solution can cut down on device hardware and data transmission costs for software updates, with the potential to be reduced by as much as 98%.

“Distributing updates to thousands of vehicles quickly, securely, and reliably via wireless connections is far from trivial, especially as data volumes continue to grow. The AI capabilities of Aurora Labs, the industry experience, and the 5G expertise of NTT DATA. have resulted in a solution that scales for future growth,” said Kai Grunwitz, the CEO of NTT Limited, Germany.

Gartner analysts project the automotive industry will be the most important market opportunity for 5G IoT solutions by 2023. Leveraging the growing demand, connectivity service providers now offer private 5G networks that offer reliability, uninterrupted connectivity, low latency and high bandwidth. NTT Data provides connectivity solutions that scale according to the client’s demands, optimizing for greater speeds and coverage. The aim is to offer a cost-effective solution for customers’ over-the-air software updates.

Last year, NTT Limited introduced its Edge-as-a-Service solution: a platform, powered by VMware’s edge compute stack, that enables businesses to deploy, monitor and manage applications at the edge.
