Iceotope delivers telco edge server solutions with HPE and Intel

Iceotope, a provider of precision liquid cooling systems, is offering a new server developed in partnership with Intel and HPE. The companies say Iceotope’s Kul RAN meets the needs of telco and harsh edge deployments.

The Kul RAN system is said to be an energy-efficient and resilient server solution that uses precision liquid cooling. The system is designed to address challenges in extreme edge deployments across a telco estate. The rack has a compact size of 19 inches and contains HPE ProLiant DL110 servers with 4th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors. These processors handle high-density, low-latency edge, virtualized RAN and 5G services. Additionally, the rack fits into already existing infrastructure.

“This partnership has enabled the rapid advancement of a host of 5G-powered applications bringing data processing and content closer to the point of use in all industrial, commercial and consumer contexts,” says David Craig, the CEO of Iceotope.

According to Iceotope, it helps reduce power consumption and maintenance costs while increasing data center density, allowing for reliable data processing installations close to the point of use despite various environmental challenges.

Kul RAN enables up to a 40% reduction in power consumption compared to edge servers. When paired with 4th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors and HPE ProLiant DL110 servers, further power efficiencies can be achieved, company executives say.

Iceotope notes that Kul RAN reduces on-site maintenance costs and provides reliable operations with fewer service visits. It has an IP67-rated sealed enclosure to protect sensitive components from thermal shock, dust and other airborne contaminants, allowing factory-like conditions. This “fit and forget” solution ensures low operational costs for telco providers.

The Kul RAN product is designed to provide excellent server uptime even in extreme conditions and goes beyond the NEBS compliance standards. It is a stand-alone product that can be shipped in a box and doesn’t need to be sold with servers and infrastructure together, says Iceotope.

“The ability to deploy servers at extreme locations with reduced power consumption and maintenance costs, as well as enhanced server uptime, could be a game-changer in this market,” says Phil Cutrone, the SVP and general manager of Service Providers, OEM, Telco and Major Accounts at HPE.

The company says Kul RAN is a configurable and scalable telco edge solution with modular units that can quickly be set up on 19-inch short-depth racks. No additional cooling infrastructure is needed; the Iceotope chassis provides all necessary functions for hot or cold environments.

“As Intel works to enable more sustainable outcomes for customers, this innovation, in collaboration with HPE and Iceotope, represents a step toward delivering solutions that reduce environmental impacts,” says Jeni Barovian Panhorst, the VP and GM of the network & edge compute division at Intel.

Iceotope collaborated with Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Intel, and nVent in March to create Kul Extreme. This eco-friendly Open RAN solution is energy-efficient. This precision liquid cooling system will become increasingly crucial for telecom companies striving to achieve sustainability and energy efficiency targets.
