Vewd, Renesas work on future in-car streaming experiences

Vewd, a solutions provider for OTT services, has integrated Renesas; system-on-chip products to their cloud-managed system for content aggregation and in-vehicle infotainment. Integrating Renesas’ automotive hardware with the Vewd infotainment system will enable automotive OEMs and vendors to deliver simplified and improved in-car streaming experiences, the companies say.

Vewd for Automotive is a content aggregation solution that allows OEMs to manage their content rights based on geography, brand, model, and user profile. The solution also gives the flexibility to control and manage the media pipeline through a unified cloud platform. Vewd for Automotive will operate on both Android and Linux-based systems.

“We’re excited to collaborate with Vewd on making in-car streaming entertainment more easily accessible,” said Yusuke Kawasaki, director of automotive digital products marketing at Renesas. “Combining our R-Car SoCs with Vewd for Automotive reduces product development time, speeds up the time to market for our customers, and provides intuitive and better driving experiences for end-users.”

Renesas R-Car H3e and R-Car M3e system-on-chips are designed to provide next-gen car navigation systems featuring Arm Cortex-A57 and Arm Cortex-A53 processor cores with a variety of communication interfaces. The hardware platform lets users import images and videos from their preferred devices, including smartphones and connected applications. Other functionalities include supporting display touch controls, voice recognition through microphone input, and audio output to multiple speakers.

In-vehicle infotainment software requires timely updates to deliver higher computing performance and support more functionalities for a rich experience. The automotive system-on-chips are equipped with security functions to offer the flexibility for secure over-the-air (OTA) software updates.

“Teaming up with Renesas enables a faster, simpler rollout of in-vehicle infotainment equipment,” said Vincent Duval, head of automotive business development at Vewd. “We’re thrilled to add Renesas to our growing automotive partner ecosystem and help our customers address the consumer expectation for state-of-the-art in-car streaming.”

Last year, Samsung Electronics introduced three automotive system-on-chips, with one of them including Exynos Auto V7 for in-vehicle infotainment systems. The miniature hardware supports four displays and up to twelve cameras in the vehicle and is equipped with a HiFi 4 audio DSP for an enhanced audio experience. Exynos Auto V7 also supports up to 32GB of LPDDR4 RAM and a bandwidth of 68.3GB/s.
