Tampnet lands 5-year contract for hybrid network on Island Innovator rig

Tampnet announced that it will be powering Island Drilling’s new X-BOW rig as part of a five year Tampnet contract with Island Drilling AS, to install its fast 4G LTE connectivity to the rig Island Innovator.
The offering combines LEO satellite backhaul (Starlink and OneWeb), Tampnet North Sea LTE, and T-FAST microwave/fibre backbone with AI-driven orchestration to ensure the best possible connectivity.
The private 4G/5G network delivers enhanced mobility for workers, sensors, drones and robots as well as advanced digital use cases such as predictive maintenance and digital twins.
“A well-connected rig is no longer a nice-to-have; it’s the backbone for remote operations and data-driven decision-making,” says Trygve Hagevik, CCO at Tampnet. “By blending LEO, LTE and LOS/fibre with real-time AI traffic steering and Private Network, we’re giving Island Drilling the performance and resilience they need – plus the freedom to scale advanced use cases such as predictive maintenance, digital twins and autonomous inspections”.
The offering comprises hybrid backhaul, AI path selection, edge-prepared architecture, and 24/7 support with SLAs. The installation will be in place in time for Island Innovator’s next campaign in the North Sea, in Q4 2025.
Tampnet is a leader in offshore high-capacity and low latency communications, claiming the world´s largest offshore network owned by any company.
The collaboration is intended to improve the efficiency and safety of operations and further enable digital transformation on the Island Innovator rig.
Earlier this year Tampnet partnered with Armada to deploy AI-powered edge computing to offshore energy rigs.
