Qualcomm acquires Cellwize to advance 5G edge infrastructure

Qualcomm announced it acquired Cellwize Wireless Technologies, folding in its 5G network deployment, automation, and management software platform to bolster its own infrastructure solutions.

In a press release, Qualcomm says the acquisition will enhance its leadership in 5G Radio Access Networks (RAN) innovation and adoption. Cellwize offers a cloud-native, multi-vendor RAN automation and management platform. Qualcomm says the addition of Cellwize’s platform will provide a number of benefits:

  • Accelerate the development of the connected intelligent edge through the deployment of technology for 5G private and public networks that reduce network deployment time and simplify network management.
  • Bring a programmable solution that enables an application marketplace for differentiation and customization across several vertical industries.
  • Deliver a horizontal solution for simple management of multi-vendor ecosystem for open virtualized networks.
  • Provide a flexible RAN architecture solution like Open RAN, virtualized RAN, or traditional RAN, and multi-generational support.

The acquisition is expected to propel Qualcomm’s aims of digitally transforming industries, powering the connected intelligent edge, and supporting the growth of the cloud economy. Qualcomm recently showed robotics applications at the Qualcomm 5G Summit for use-cases in a wide range of industries.

“We are excited to join Qualcomm Technologies as we are both committed to accelerate the mission to modernize Radio Access Networks and enable mobile network operators and enterprises to fully realize and monetize their digital transformation,” says Ofir Zemer, the former CEO of Cellwize.

Terms of the deal were not announced. Cellwize has 182 employees, based on data from LinkedIn. Zemer will be the vice president of product management at Qualcomm.

The two companies have a pre-existing relationship. Qualcomm invested in Cellwize in 2020 through its 5G Ecosystem Fund for 5G innovation and adoption.

Industry executives from Bell, Deutsche Telekom, HPE Communications, Verizon, and Vodafone expressed their contentment with the acquisition and said they would continue their collaboration with Qualcomm and/or Cellwize.
