Nokia and Tampnet extend 5G to the Gulf, bringing real-time edge offshore

Nokia and Tampnet team up for 5G offshore connectivity in the Gulf of Mexico, extending the companies’ deployment of a 5G-ready edge computing network in Norway.

The partnership will provide Tampnet with a next generation 5G standalone core network to support the delivery of mission critical, high-quality, reliable wireless connectivity covering 120 base stations on over 350-400 offshore platforms, rigs, and vessels.

This program is making it easier for offshore applications with next-level functions such as real-time remote monitoring, predictive maintenance and scalable automation.

“Our collaboration with Tampnet demonstrates how Nokia’s private wireless solutions are enabling digital transformation in some of the world’s most challenging environments,” says Jeff Pittman, Head of North America Enterprise, Mobile Networks, Nokia. “Together, we are setting new standards for offshore connectivity that will deliver long-term value to energy producers and their workforce.”

Tampnet’s infrastructure, which comprises subsea fiber networks, serves as the backbone of offshore connectivity in the Gulf, providing ultra-low latency and maximum uptime to crucial operations.

The 5G AirScale solution from Nokia will open up new digital use-cases, such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and machine learning, to improve safety for our people and efficiency of its offshore operations.

This joint venture will define and manage the overall TUPI submarine cable project, building a high-quality infrastructure system.

Nokia recently secured a $1 billion NVIDIA investment to drive AI-powered 6G networks.
