GlobalFoundries acquires MIPS to bolster RISC-V edge and AI compute portfolio
Semiconductor manufacturer GlobalFoundries (GF) announced its acquisition of MIPS, a leading AI and processor IP supplier, to enhance its AI and compute capabilities.
The acquisition will expand GF’s portfolio with advanced RISC-V processor IP and software tools for applications in autonomous mobility, industrial automation, data centers, and intelligent edge.
MIPS recently launched the Atlas portfolio, featuring compute cores for real-time and AI edge processing, and Atlas Explorer, a virtual platform for design optimization.
GF aims to leverage MIPS’ expertise to offer more flexible solutions and improve efficiency and performance across various industries.

MIPS will continue to operate as a standalone business within GF post-acquisition, maintaining its focus on autonomous platforms and physical AI. The acquisition is expected to close in the second half of 2025, pending regulatory approvals.
